How to Make Your Very Own Amulet
Amulets are powerful talismans that have been used by witches and magickal practitioners for ages.
You may choose to use an amulet for general protection, or you may choose to use one to help you with the manifestation of specific intentions.
Whatever your aim, these steps can help you accomplish your goals!
Choosing Your Amulet
Sometimes your amulet may choose you! But in other cases, you could decide to create your very own amulet from scratch, or you may choose to bless a piece of jewelry.
You can also use other items like small totems, coins, crystals, animal parts, plant parts, drawings, or written words to create your amulet.
If you’d like, you can do a combination of these things and add as many as you like to your assigned cord.
Making an Amulet from Scratch
Design
Before you get started, do a little bit of brainstorming to decide what kind of shapes, sigils, or symbols you want to include on your amulet. You can utilize the front and the back if you wish.
Check out my video on creating your own sigils here:
When you’ve decided on a design, the crafting can begin!
Clay
You can use molding clay, polymer clay, air-dry clay, or even Play-Doh to create your amulet.
You can mold the clay into whatever shape you like, or you can roll the clay into a ball and then flatten it to get a circle or oval shape.
Once you have chosen your desired shape, you can use a tack, Exacto knife, paper clip, or toothpick to draw a symbol or sigil onto your amulet. Make sure to leave room for the puncture point to run your cord through.
Poke a hole through the top of your amulet and either allow it to dry, bake it, or run it through a kiln if you have access to one.
Aluminum
Draw your design onto a piece of aluminum and cut out the shape. You can roll it out to flatten it and then emboss your designs onto it. Poke a hole through the top of your amulet and lace your cord through it.
Once you have chosen or created your pendant, you’re ready to turn it into a powerful amulet with a blessing.
I highly recommend saging or otherwise purifying your amulet before you begin the blessing process so that you can ensure that the energy is as pure and high vibrational as possible.
I also recommend doing this with yourself before your ritual for the same reasons and benefits to your energies.
Once your soon-to-be amulet is cleansed, you may begin the blessing.
Here is my usual reminder that witchcraft is all about the DIY process, so feel absolutely free to create your own blessing ritual and write your own blessing spell.
The more of your own energy you put into this, the more powerful it will be. In the following section, I will share some ideas of how you can go about blessing your amulet and a couple of spells for you to either use or draw inspiration from.
Now that you have your amulet ready, it’s time to ready your spell and yourself.
Some may choose to do this under the full or waxing moon, during certain astrological transits, in the sunlight, or simply whenever it aligns for you to do so. Each of these moments have their own power and none of it should be ignored.
I won’t lie, this is really when you want to get creative. Get your tools, candles, crystals, ritual robes, and whatever else you may want to use and set them up.
You may want to cast a circle, call in the elements, your ancestors, guides, and deities, depending on your practice and how much you want to charge this amulet.
Envision a beam of light flowing from the Universe into you and use your pointer finger, a wand, or an athame to draw a circle in a COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction around you and your working space and tools.
It is important to do this in a counter-clockwise motion because this is the act of bringing energy in. We’ll use clockwise later to send energy out.
Calling in the Elements & Directions
It is best to do this in your own words but know that each element corresponds to a direction, so stay mindful of your position in the Universe during this process,
North - Earth
West - Water
East - Air
South - Fire
“I call to the Northern direction and the elements of Earth. Be present with me now. Bring with you your strength, fortitude, and centered energies.
I call to the Western direction and the Element of Water. Be present with me now. Bring with you your flexibility, fluidity, and purification energies.
I call to the Easter direction and the element of Air. Be present with me now, Bring with you your momentum, quickness, and higher consciousness energies.
I call to the Southern direction and the Element of Fire. Be present with me now. Bring with you your passion, power, and sacred energies.“
This one really is best to do in your own words because they are YOUR ancestors, and invoking them can look differently for everyone. I like to call in some ancestors by name, as well as the ancestors that I share a spiritual connection to, not just blood.
“I call to Lavilla, great matriarch of us, Be present with me now. Lend me your love, light, and purest sight.” Etcetera and so forth for every ancestors I’d like to invite.
“I call upon the witches past, quicken your pace and join me fast. Lend me your power, determination, and knowledge. Join me in our sacred circle as we continue our creative works.”
Some practitioners may want to call upon the Hermetics or certain patron saints of their chosen religion. Remember, this is your practice and you are free to do this however it feels right to you.
“I call upon my spirit guides, always watching, waiting, and protecting. Lend me your guidance now, protect me through this rite as you do through every night.”
Most witches will choose at least one deity to work with. Hacate chose me a long time ago, and while I have worked with many deities, she forever has my heart. If you have yet to choose one, don’t fret. They will reveal themselves to you when the time is right. If you don’t feel comfortable with this part of the practice you can skip this step, there is no penalty for that.
“I call upon Hecate, Night Mother, Goddess of the Craft, Mother of the Gods, nether, nocturnal, and infernal one. Grant me the grace of your presence, stand solid with me as I flex the power that you’ve given me, Lend me your blessings through my workings and protect my rites as they journey into the divine.”
What I have shared here are the basic beginnings of ever spell and ritual, which parts you chose to utilize are completely up to you, but when working with something as sacred as an amulet, it is important to generate all of the power that you can.
Consecrating
Once your amulet has been purified, you may want to consecrate it with incense and/or essential oils for added power and focus. I am a big proponent of using Dragon’s Blood for this purpose because Dragon’s Blood is all about adding power, but if you have specific intentions for this amulet you may want to use more specific herbs, such as:
Love - Rose
Calmness- Lavender
Protection- Frankincense or Bergamot
Prosperity- Cinnamon or Sweet Orange
Divine Connection - Angelica
There are tons of different herbs, making for tons of different incense and essential oils. You can use one or a blend of a few to achieve your goals.
Check out the Wicked Herb Grimoire for ideas:
Once you have chosen your oils and/or incense, you can begin the concentration process. You really can do one or the other but I will explain the process as doing both.
Pass the amulet through the smoke of the incense as little as three times and as many as nine.
You can chant a spell or mantra at this time, such as:
“As I pass you through the smoke
Your intended power I do invoke
Fill this vessel with pure energy
This is my will so mote it be.”
But, you can also just chant a couple words of affirmation to charge the amulet as well.
Once you have consecrated your amulet with smoke, dress it with the oils. Dab the desired oil or oil blend onto your fingers and begin tracing over the amulet from top to bottom until you have fullen dampened both sides.
You can once again use your spell, a different spell, words or affirmation, or a simple “as above, so below: during this part of the process.
When your amulet is fully consecrated, you can move on to the blessing rite.
The Blessing Rite
Once you’re settled in your circle with your chosen energies, it is time to bless your amulet.
You may choose to hold your amulet as you cast your spell, or you may choose to place it on an altar and hold your hands around it. Follow your gut because every experience is different.
When you’ve decided, it’s time to cast your spell. Again, its better to write this spell yourself, especially if you have specific intentions for this amulet, but here’s a general chant that will get the job done:
“On this night (or day) in this hour,
I call upon the sacred power.
Lend me the favor of your hand,
Bless this amulet across the land.
Imbue this stone (or whatever you used) with love and light,
Fuel it now with your sight.
Invoke pure energy into thee,
This is my will, so mote it be,
And so it is done.
After you have blessed your amulet you may kindly dismiss your spirit guests and close your circle by casting it back in a clockwise motion.
If you’re practicing this rite on a full moon you may leave it to charge under the moonlight, or you may wait until the next full moon to charge it.
You can recharge this piece for the rest of your life by using the energies of any and every full moon. You can also re-consecrate it with incense and oils if ever you feel its power has been drained.
You might notice this has happened if it starts to feel different, uncommonly cold, heavier than usual, or if you’ve been through a rough patch or have recently dealt with some nasty energies.
Happy Crafting!
