Pothos & Philodendron

Pothos or a Philodendron?

These two plants are often confused because of their subtle differences in appearance:

Pothos: thick aerial root per node

Philodendron: several smaller nodes with thin roots growing out of them

Regardless of these differences, they both require similar care.

Care

These are chatty plants that will tell you exactly what they need when they need it. They are relatively tough plants, can be moved outside on nice days.

Sunlight

Bright, indirect . Find a position near a window where the sun’s rays never actually touch the foliage.

Note:

If several leaves at the same time, the plant may be getting too much light. On the other hand,

If the stems are long and leggy and the leaves are far apart, the plant isn’t getting enough light.

Water

Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Note:

Wilting leaves are a sign that the plant is getting too much or not enough water, but the leaves can recover quickly after watering adjustment.

Pruning

These plants do no need pruning but it can be done for aesthetic purposes.

Note:

If you’re unsure about pruning your plant, wait. These plants like to be crowded and taking too much could weaken the plant.

Trimming

You can remove old and dead stems and leaves freely.
